Overview of the UK Car Practical Driving Test
Test Day Requirements
Before taking your practical test, you must have passed the driving theory test. On the day of the test, you need to:
- Produce your provisional driving licence.
- Sign your name on the examiner’s iPad.
- Show you can read a car number plate from a distance of 20 metres (for vehicles with new style plates).
You will also be asked if you want your instructor to accompany you during the test or be present during the debrief.

Vehicle Safety Questions
“Tell Me” Question: At the start of the test, you’ll be asked a question such as, “Tell me how you would check your tyres have sufficient tread depth and are in a safe condition.”
“Show Me” Question: While driving, the examiner will ask you a question like, “When it’s safe, show me how to wash and clean the rear windscreen.”

Assessing Your Driving Ability
During the 40 to 45 minute test, the examiner will look for a consistently safe standard of driving. Follow the directions given by the examiner and deal with each situation as it arises.
Focus on the immediate task and avoid dwelling on previous mistakes to maintain concentration.
Test Components
Angled Start: Pulling out at an angle from behind a parked car.
Normal Stop: Pulling in for a normal stop.
Hill Start: Demonstrating a safe hill start.
Emergency Stop: Conducted in 1 in 4 tests.
Reverse Exercises:
The examiner will ask you to perform one of the following:
Parallel park at the side of the road.
Park in a bay by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (as directed by the examiner).
Pull up on the right, reverse for around two car lengths, and rejoin the traffic.
Independent Driving Section
You will drive independently for about 20 minutes, following road signs or directions from a Sat Nav. This section tests your ability to make safe driving decisions on your own.
You can ask the examiner to repeat directions, and don’t worry about taking a wrong turn; the examiner will help you get back on track.

What our students are saying about us
I went to Gerry after having approximately 20 hours with another instructor but felt as if I wasn't progressing. My friend recommended Gerry and after a couple of hours with him my confidence and skills grew significantly.
Gerry is really patient, gives clear instructions & has good chat! I would recommend him to anyone looking for a friendly and professional instructor.
Gerry was a very patient instructor who I felt comfortable with from the beginning. His clear instructions and kind manner helped me build my confidence with driving quickly and he addressed all my questions and concerns straight away (no matter how small and trivial they were).
I would highly recommend Gerry as a driving instructor.
Gerry Brennan is a brilliant driving instructor as he helped me pass first time.
He was always patient and very knowledgeable and whenever I asked a question he always knew the answer. This helped me gain confidence while driving as he was always good at explaining things. He would also help me to correct my mistakes so that I knew what to do if I encountered the same situation next time around.
Gerry is a fantastic instructor.
My partner passed first time 5 years ago with gerry and when I wanted to take lessons last year he recommended him to me. Gerry is calm, gives clear instructions and always made me feel at ease on my lessons. I passed first time with gerry and will definitely be recommending him to anyone I know that is looking to learn!
